Το πασίγνωστο αγγλικό παραμύθι "The Water Babies. A fairy Tale for a Land-baby" γράφτηκε από τον Charles Kingsley για τον μικρότερο του γιο, το 1863. Το δίδαγμα του παραμυθιού είναι τρυφερό και πολύ σωστό: να συμπεριφέρεσαι στους άλλους όπως θα ήθελες να συμπεριφέρονται εκείνοι σε σένα.
Πρόκειται για τις υποβρύχιες περιπέτειες του Tom, ενός αγοριού που καθαρίζει καμινάδες, που πέφτει μέσα στο πόταμι, την ώρα που έπαιζε με ένα κοριτσάκι της ανώτερης ταξης, την Ellie. Ο Tom μεταμορφώνεται σε ενα "Water Βaby" και ξεκινά ένα επικό ταξίδι, συντροφιά με παράξενα πλάσματα της θάλασσας και τις νεράιδες Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby και Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid.
Η γνωστή φωτογράφος Zena Holloway, που ειδικεύεται στις υποβρύχιες φωτογραφήσεις, ανέλαβε να κάνει μία σειρά φωτογραφιών για το παραμύθι, και με τη βοήθεια της εικονογράφου Heidi Taylor, επέτυχε ένα θαυμάσιο, ονειρικό και πραγματικά παραμυθένιο αποτέλεσμα.

Tom and his companion went on until they reached the Arctic Ocean

It never occured to Tom that he might treat apprentices better than Grimes treated him
The Whale laughed violently, coughing up all the creatures he'd swallowed that morning
On crisp, clear nights watch carefully and you may well see Tom and Ellie floating across the sky

Tom wiped Grimes's face but the soot wouldn't come off
"Who are you my little one?" asked Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby
"Tom, you 're all prickly", said Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby
They had reached the Other-End-Of-Nowhere
I've been looking for you for such a long time!
A towering green wave crashed over the deck and swept them all into the sea
"Don't hide! I do so want someone to play with", pleaded Tom
"I must be clean, I must be clean", cried Tom in his delirium to the grey old teacher
"Remember, those who wish to be clean will be clean, and those who wish to be dirty will be dirty", said old Mother Carey
The river fairies had taken the poor little sweep and transformed him into a tiny Water Baby
"Get to work, boy", spat Grimes
On snow-white covers sat the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen
He lay down and plunged his face into the clear water
And now he was free to swim away
Tom swam away, sulky and lonely
"Come out, or else!", said the wicked otter
When he woke, he gasped as he saw a powerful fish, shining silver
Down, down, down into a deep, dark pool
"Have you seen the Water Babies?", Tom asked
"Yes, I've seen Water Babies often enough", answered the lobster
Over the hills, across the sea, and up into the clouds
Tom was convinced it was too late for his friend
The Water Babies appeared, shouting and playing
Day after day the Water Babies danced and played together
"You must learn to think of others", said Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid
The candies tasted bitter, but he ate them anyway
The little girl taught him many things
A school of dolphins
"Go to the All-Alone-Stone and ask the Great Auk", said the king
"But there are no such thing as Water Babies". How do you know that?
